Super 8 Picnic in a Hand collective is a Vilnius based metro group of young artists in general section. Filmmakers and others interested in creating, curating and showing super8, 8 and 16 mm format films in native Lithuania and around globe. System founded in 2008 as an independent artist’s research group on analog film possibilities, the collective soon became Super 8 Picnic in a Hand. In 2009 we change our open politic into closed 12 persons. The collective became sure and opened the deficit “Tree LAB” – an analog and experimental film lab, searching for connections with young active analog filmmakers around Europe. Motto: make a break do a break.

Independent filmmakers Mike Corrigan, Travis Hiibner, Derrick King and Gary McLeod formed Head Juice Productions in 2004 after working alone and in lose affiliation with one another for years. Their collaboration has thus far produced two short films, the award-winning What’s in the Barn? (2005), and the newly-released Jack the Vomiter (2006), an irreverent homage to the silent film era thriller. The Spokane, Washington-based collective works exclusively in film-based formats, primarily Super 8 and 16mm. Areas of film interest include — but are not limited to — expressionism, surrealism, noir, stop-motion animation, documentary, and found footage. Their next film is currently in pre-production. ...

FlickerSpokane Film Festival
In early 1994, Norwood Cheek attended a film screening in Athens, Georgia by the name of Flicker. A super 8 fanatic since 15 years of age and a videographer for local musicians such as Superchunk and the Archers of Loaf, he thought that Flicker would work well in Chapel Hill, NC, which was home to many super 8 filmmakers. That fall, Cheek held the first Flicker in town, screening films at the Local 506 for an enthusiastic audience who sat on its hard cement floor. Thus, FlickerSpokane began and still maintains the same format and requirements as it did six years ago – no entry fee, films must originate on film, and be under 15 minutes. ...

The One Take Super 8 Event (OTS8) began in 2000, with 20 filmmakers each shooting a single reel of Super 8 film, which then premiered to an audience without the filmmakers seeing their work beforehand. All the films were shown as shot. No cuts. No splices. The popularity of this non-competitive festival has allowed it to return each year with more filmmakers participating. To date over 300 films have been created for the One Take Super 8 Event.

The 8 fest is a unique festival that presents all forms of small-gauge film: 8mm, Super 8 and 9.5mm, as well as works in installation, loops, and 'proto-cinema devices' like zoetropes. The 8 fest is a festival for anyone using small-gauge to create rough little gems on film – personal, handmade, experimental, animations, diaries, essays, collage, cut-ups, performance/film, music/film. Das Super8 Bootcamp will hier Abhilfe schaffen.

29 PALMS, CA is a feature film / art piece that explores and chronicles the dreams and fantasies of a group of individuals who live in a trailer community in the Californian desert. The world depicted in the film is inspired by the photographs of German artist Stefanie Schneider in that it combines the notions of reality and fantasy and explores the resonance of both within a desert landscape and a transient culture. The characters depicted in the film, (an actress, a singer, a DJ, a motel owner and his wife, an US army soldier, a mystic, a princess, a recluse, a movie ticket seller, two hitchhikers, a doctor, a director, etc.), are to be played by both actors and non-actors. The story is constructed through the interpretation of real life communications (i.e. phone calls, emails, conversations) that have taken place as the individuals depicted in the story try to make sense of events that have occurred in real life. In this sense the story is, in part, a biography and social commentary, and the characters are the exaggerated alter egos of the individuals who play them. ...

Lowbrow Super 8MM Galleria
Posted by Chris Burns (18.11.2009)
So you’re a graphic designer in say, 1977, and your mission is to design the covers of action, adventure, and monster horror movies, 8MM Super 8. What do you do? You put on rock and roll music and you whip out your colors and big eyeballs! Fancy lettering, fire, and skulls! Actually you could probably get away with only fancy letters or fire. Take a peek through this collection of Super 8 lowbrow movie boxes and tell me the formula.

Revel-8 kicks off this year with its most exciting theme yet – Curiosity. It’s human nature to enquire and question, so this year Revel-8 invites filmmakers to be inquisitive and explore quirky, weird and down right curious characters, stories and styles, on a single cartridge of Super-8 film. Filmmakers resident in Australia are invited to respond creatively and innovatively to the theme of CURIOSITY, and to explore the genres of drama, documentary, experimental and animation. Films must be shot in sequence on just one cartridge of Super 8 film lasting just three and a half minutes - no processing allowed!

Preservation Project Films is a blog, website, and film production company that belongs to Ashley Maynor, a Super-8 enthusiast and award-winning documentarian, whose films and new media works have been exhibited around the country. Here, she offers up advice for those looking to preserve family archives and home movies and writes about her experience as an archivist, curator, and filmmaker.

Home Movie Day first commenced in August 2003 when a group of film archivists created a cultural outlet for the public display of private films. Similar gatherings have occurred annually worldwide. This diverse collection presents 22 amateur films, including a 16mm print of George Eastman and Thomas Edison documenting the use of Kodak's Kodacolor technology. It also contains films of utter anonymity, such as a Super 8 recording of carnival rides in action--the film's silver emulsion having decomposed so as to produce a psychedelic experience not unlike that of a kaleidoscopic acid rock video. If only commercially driven content such as America's Funniest Home Videos or "reality" TV were so curiously entertaining. Living Room Cinema's bits of personal history are engrossing because they were never intended for mass viewing. Spanning much of the last century, the films provide authentic voyeurism; conscious cinema verite this is not. Many of the clips are presented with optional commentary by various participants, family members, or discoverers of lost treasures. Alternatively, composer Donald Sosin provides original music scores recalling silent film-era accompaniment. Recommended for libraries serving film studies programs. (Eric Pasteur, Peoria P.L., IL, Library Journal. February 15, 2008)

“The look of super 8 is still very much sought after,” says Julien Dorgère, the French founder of the new Super 8 Shots film festival in Galway. “People shoot digital and they all complain that it’s flat. It is very hard to make digital film footage look good. But with super 8, it has a charm.
