Electronic Music Resources
This section of Ubuweb is devoted to technical resources concerning the practice of electronic and experimental sound. This is a place for information about actual methods and techniques, with little writing on aesthetics alone. It takes the form of technical/historical articles, interviews, books, small-press magazines and patents.

Tyler Adams explores perceptual dimensions of aural-spatial-visual-temporal relationships through installation, sculpture, video, and other media. Central to his work is a pure fascination with sound as a medium as well as a modality for perceptual understanding in broad contrast to vision. He holds a BFA from California Institute of the Arts, MFA from UCLA, and MS in Architectural Acoustics from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.

Soundmuseum is the online museum for contemporary sound art. It opened online in 2008 and has over 200 sound art works in its collection. Every month, the museum features an exhibition in its gallery. The core of the museum is the depot, where you will find the full art collection.
"For us, sound art is an extremely important art form that deserves its own internationally accessible museum.
Sound art takes you to new dimensions and uncharted territory. It enriches your experiences beyond what image can accomplish. In this fast-paced visual world we live in, we believe that it's important to stimulate the senses with sound.
Sound touches us in places where image can't reach. For us, sound art is like food; a healthy substance for the soul that inspires and warms and reassures. Up until now, a place where people can experience all of this hasn't existed. With Soundmuseum.fm, we want to create that place; a place where an audience can listen to unique sound pieces in a peaceful virtual space, free from interruptions; a place that is accessible from anywhere in the world, where people can listen to original works, and where sound can rise above its visual surroundings."

As a visual artist, he works primarily with machines to create pen-on-paper drawings that explore the limits of traditional drawing through randomness and order. In 2004 he began work on 1-Bit Music, combining his music with primitive, hand-programmed electronics that investigate the foundations of digital sound.

Sound artists Stephan Moore and Scott Smallwood began performing as the duo Evidence in 2001. Focusing on the universe of real-world sound, Evidence pours field recordings like water into their compositional and improvisational process, resulting in music that balances between tight organization and unregulated flow. Using recording equipment, laptops, and other electronic devices, Evidence creates music that deals with gradual change, improvised over time, sometimes atmospheric, sometimes pulsating, always texturally striking and unique. Resisting classification into a single genre, Evidence is equally at home performing in experimental venues, clubs, galleries, planetariums, and rooftops.

Heterophone Aspekte auditiver Aufmerksamkeit.pdf

Colour and Sound
“The early history of this art was driven by an interest in color. In the eighteenth century, a Jesuit priest, Louis- Bertrand Castel, invented the first color organ. Others, including D.D. Jameson, Bainbridge Bishop, and A. Wallace Rimington, created color organs through the next century. These instruments, typically controlled by playing a pianostyle keyboard, bathed a screen in everchanging colored light….

[...] The Greek Mysteries included in their doctrines a magnificent concept of the relationship existing between music and form. The elements of architecture, for example, were considered as comparable to musical modes and notes, or as having a musical counterpart. Consequently when a building was erected in which a number of these elements were combined, the structure was then likened to a musical chord, which was harmonic only when it fully satisfied the mathematical requirements of harmonic intervals. The realization of this analogy between sound and form led Goethe to declare that “architecture is crystallized music.” …

A musical process is akin to a visual process, both are very similar for me in how I perceive time and space, but it is the influence of listening in music that often is the framework or perception of sound in my work
As a musician, Ben works with open reel tape, cassettes, field recordings and magnetic objects. This formed out of his interest in the pre-recorded sound as a live process in music. From preparations including magnets, motors, and pins amongst others, he has been developing a sound palette that explores time, space, texture, tonality, harmonics and decay in both improvisations and compositions. Current collaborations include duos with Helmut Lemke (tapes & longstrings, DE/UK), Lee Patterson (amplified objects, UK), Hainer Woermann (amplified cardboard, DE), Michael Vorfeld (lightbulbs, DE), and Jason Zeh (tape treatments USA).

Automated Noise Ensemble
Rob Gawthrop and Bob Levene have worked together as ANE since 2000.  Brought together by a common interest in sound and in particular  the actions that produce sound, and the process of its perception. The work explores noise and music by adapting,  re-inventing and constructing musical instruments, devices and structures.  These are played or activated electro-mechanically, usually live, through performance, exhibition  or on vinyl.  Although there is a material intent to the work, an irreverent attitude towards musical instruments belies an inherent humour.  The means of its production and the context and space of its presentation are integral to the experience for the viewer/listener. The physicality of the sound  and the apparent contradictions between what is seen and what is heard relate directly to the sensations produced in the listener.

Sun Boxes are an environment to enter and exit at will. It's comprised of twenty speakers operating independently, each powered by the sun via solar panels. There is a different loop set to play a guitar note in each box continuously. These guitar notes collectively make a Bb chord. Because the loops are different in length, once the piece begins they continually overlap and the piece slowly evolves over time.

The sounds of Sun Boxes have been described as both soothing and energizing. A unique combination of adjectives often used to describe yoga, or meditation. When experiencing the piece, Sun Boxes allows the participant to slow down, and notice the subtleties of the composition unfold. With the abundance of technology and hustle of this culture it is a much needed concept to not only be allowed, but also encouraged to slow down.

stephen cornford - I am a sculptor working with music, sound and noise. My interests lie in the relationship between the physical and spatial attributes of sounding objects, musical instruments and audio technologies and their acoustic properties or timbral characteristics. I use processes of mechanisation and automation to ensure that control of the resultant music is as contingent upon aleatoric sonic phenomena as on my design of the system. I borrow strategies from bricolage, process music, kinetic sculpture and the extended technique of free improvisation. My installations employ space as a physical and acoustic substance in order to provoke the audience into a durational and subjective encounter with the work. My performances employ unpredictable processes and systems to ensure that my position in relation to the sounds is primarily as a listener.

TONEWHEELS is an experiment in converting graphical imagery to sound, inspired by some of the pioneering 20th Century electronic music inventions. Transparent tonewheels with repeating patterns are spun over light-sensitive electronic circuitry to produce sound and light pulsations and textures. This all-analog set is performed entirely live without the use of computers, using only overhead projectors as light source, performance interface and audience display. In this way, TONEWHEELS aims to open up the "black box" of electronic music and video by exposing the working processes of the performance for the audience to see.
