 They Shoot Pictures, Don't They? is dedicated to the art of motion picture film-making and most specifically to that one particular individual calling the shots from behind the camera - the film director. The 800-plus directors listed within these web pages range from the great geniuses of cinema (Godard, Welles, Hitchcock, etc.) to the great studio auteurs of the 40's and 50's (Hawks, Siodmak, Fuller, etc.), to the European masters (Buñuel, Renoir, Bresson), to the modern-day breed (Tarantino, The Coen Brothers, Kiarostami). They Shoot Pictures, Don't They? should be viewed primarily as a cinematic traffic cop. In other words, we'll guide you in the direction of each director's best work (both from our own perspective and also from a critical-acclaim perspective). We'll also point you in the direction of each director's full filmographies (courtesy of links to the Internet Movie Database and the All-Movie Guide) and other valuable resources (via links to relevant pages and relevant reading materials). BANNED & CENSORED CINEMA
Banned and Censored Cinema analyzes a far-ranging selection of films that are marked as having been banned, censored, or otherwise extremely controversial in their countries of origin or in the international arena. Directors have had to face such punishments as imprisonment, exile, marginality, and career loss. Weekly screenings are placed in context by extensive materials regarding: 1) the individual film’s conditions of production; 2) the film’s governmental, critical and popular reception; 3) the sociopolitical climate of the “home country;” and 4) the film’s director. Close attention is paid to various state-sponsored forms of restriction of expression, including “morality codes” and censor boards. Freedom of speech and the right to receive information and ideas—Constitutional rights in the U.S.—are conceptual touchstones of the course. Although much of the course content derives from the 1960s and 1970s, included are key examples of both silent and contemporary cinema. The course’s main body of international feature films is complemented by several sessions devoted to short films (avant-garde, experimental) and documentaries. Directors include: Kenneth Anger, Carolee Schneemann, Jack Smith, Jean Genet, Lawrence Brose, Frederick Wiseman, Todd Haynes, Michael Powell, Catherine Breillat, Jafar Panahi, Oscar Micheaux, Tahmineh Milani, José Mojica Marins, Pier Paolo Pasolini, D.W. Die vorliegende Internetpräsentation des "Atlas europäischer Filmkultur" ist lediglich eine Sammlung der Druckdateien des Atlas im PDF-Format, ohne das die Seiten für die Erfordernisse des Internet neu gesetzt und bearbeitet wurden. So finden Sie die Seiten mit dem für den Buchdruck typischen linken und rechten Satzspiegel, die Seitenzahlen befinden sich jeweils am unteren linken bzw. rechten Seitenrand, die Seitenzahlen des Inhaltsverzeichnisses und der Seiten sind die des Buchdruckes und entsprechen nicht denen, die der PDF-Viewer anzeigt etc.
Dies macht die Arbeit mit dieser Präsentation etwas unkomfortabel und umständlich. Es war uns jedoch so möglich, den Atlas schnell und mit geringem zeitlichen und finanziellen Aufwand einem breiten Publikum via Internet zur Verfügung zu stellen.
